Readings

This week's class was very much chill, we got to hang out and play some established disney board games but it was a good way to sort of begin to understand what we were beginning to work towards with our final project. For me I was trying to focus and understand the idea of using the “playspace” as a means to augment the players experience. In the game i play which i believe was called “Launch Pad'' which wa based off the space mountain ride at disney, the main way to achieve your goals was to navigate the board space grantex, your movements were sort of out of your hands so it really became nothing more than a game of dice rolls. That said it really opened my eyes to the idea of a true to life board game one can move their character around in. With the box art we were given to brainstorm with I've decided I really want to bring the idea of a sort of noir espionage spy thriller to a board game. I think the way to incorporate that into a playspace would be to make a board game arena that is reminiscent of a city, and make your objectives something like giving or receiving “Dead Drops' ' and information. In any case it brings about another idea that we can pull from this week's readings which is the “Dynamic '' game and the “Static” game. I feel that board games with the idea I have in mind are the perfect mix of both. Much like within the video the speaker talks about how certain video games can be extremely dynamic in their gameplay while staying very static with things like recurring “maps”. I think that's what I'd set out to achieve with my board game. A static atmosphere but a complex and ever changing gameplay system that's different almost every time you lay it with friends. I think the easiest way to do that is to give players lots of interactivity and autonomy within the game. What I mean to say is if they have a decent amount of control. It stands to reason each time you play it will be different. I want to have lots of choices, ways players can affect each other and interact within the game ETC. I think through that, I can achieve my goal.
